Genre Research: Fury

According to Rotten Tomatoes, "April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their platoon, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany." Throughout the movie various camera angles and movements are utilized to create an action packed movie. For example, various two-three shots are used to create a sense of amount of Ally tanks that are needed in order to destroy one Axis tank. As another example, many many medium-long shots are used to demonstrate the devastation of war. Dead bodies with severe injuries can be seen throughout the movie. Another important aspect of the movie is the mis-en-scene, such as the costumes, lighting, actors, makeup, props, and settings. The costumes in the movie are worn down, army issued attire. This is to signify the main characters experience with war and the ongoing conflict they face. The lightning in the movie can be murky at times while at other times smokey to demonstrate the destruction war can bring. The makeup is meant to resemble uncleanliness and dirt as these men have been in conflict for a long time. Also, the actors are meant to represent soldiers that are being sent to Europe to fight the Nazis. As such, the actors range in age and health, some older and stronger (likely in the military for sometime) while others are young and thin (likely drafted during this time period). Finally the props and settings are meant to resemble a World War 2 battlefield. The setting is typically wilderness, obliterated by fire and artillery fire, and the main characters use props such as machine guns, pistols, knifes, tanks, and grenades. Furthermore, another important aspect of this film and thriller genre is the sound used. This movie makes use of loud sound effects such as artillery fire or troops marching. The dialogue also contributes to the plot development of the story by revealing the experiences/moral of the soldiers fighting in their conflict. Finally, the editing contributes to the action packed scenes throughout the movie. For instance, a shot-reverse-shot is used during a tank stand off in which 3 allied tanks fight a German tank. In the end, the German tank is defeated, but not without heavy losses of 2 other tanks.

In summary, the movie "Fury," follows the conventions and codes of the thriller genre. The movie makes use of action packed scenes, a dynamic points of view, a stronger antagonist compared to the protagonists, and loud sound effects (ex. artillery fire). These elements all help to contribute to the movies fast pace and action packed plot. This fast pace combined with the action packed scenes keep audiences interested and wanting more. Fury makes use of many elements of thrillers that I love such as the suspenseful plot structure, loud sound effects, and visceral battle scenes. However, there are some elements of the movie that I do not like. Some additions to the mis-en-scene could have been added to make the movie more historically correct, and additional editing would have made the movie more suspenseful. Overall, Fury was an action packed thrill movie that will contribute significantly to me producing my Final Task. I recommend Fury to any war movie lover.

Genre Research: Bird Box

According to Rotten Tomatoes, "When a mysterious force decimates the world's population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life. Facing the unknown, Malorie finds love, hope and a new beginning only for it to unravel. Now she must flee with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But to survive, they'll have to undertake the perilous two-day journey blindfolded." Throughout the movie various camera angles and movements are utilized to create a suspenseful plot. For example, various "birds eye view" shots are used to demonstrate the characters lack of situational awareness as well their lack of ability to identify their location. As another example, various wide shots are used to establish the setting of each of scenes as well as the mysterious creatures that lurk everywhere they go. For example, in the river scene a wide shot is used to captivate the whole surroundings of the main characters, while in the movie they have a lack of understanding of where they are going. Another important aspect of the movie is the mis-en-scene, such as the costumes, lighting, actors, makeup, props, and settings. The costumes in the movie, such as the faded pink puffy jacket, belt, and boots demonstrates the main characters ability to adapt in the wilderness and their current situation. The lightning has dark and gloomy color, to keep the audience on edge. The makeup used is meant to create a sense of uncleanliness to signify the main characters being outdoors. Also, the actors are meant to resemble a family unit (minus a father) as they work together to try and survive, despite the children's' youth. Finally the props and settings are meant to resemble a post apocalyptic society. The setting is overgrown wilderness with deserted houses and cities, and the main characters use props/tools such as blindfolds, flashlights, and other survival gear. Furthermore, another important aspect of this film and thriller genre is the sound used. The movie has a very frightening and suspenseful sound track, which at certain scenes makes the audience worried for the protagonists. The dialogue between characters also contributes to their fear regarding their safety. Finally, the editing contributes to keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. For instance, there are many shot-reverse-shots between the protagonists on their journey and the monsters lurking in the bushes. However, the monsters are never actually shown it is just implied due to the camera angles and sound.

Overall, the movie "Bird Box," follows the conventions and codes of the thriller genre. Despite having an interesting plot structure, the movie makes use of suspenseful scenes, dynamic points of views, an antagonist stronger than the protagonist, loud sound effects, and amazing mis-en-scene. These elements all help to contribute to the movies suspenseful and thrilling tone. This tone leaves audiences worrying for the protagonist and what will happen next. Bird Box makes use of many elements that I enjoy in thrillers as the suspenseful plot structure, loud sound effects, interesting mis-en-scene, and dynamic points of view. However, there are some elements of the movie that I do not like. The audience is kept in the dark a lot regarding the antagonist and its origins as well as the lack of action packed scenes that can be found in other thrillers. Overall, Bird Box is an interesting movie to say the least and may be useful in producing my Final Task. I would recommend Bird Box to any movie lover that enjoys a good thrill.

Desperate to uncover the truth, Banning turns to unlikely allies to help clear his name, keep his family from harm and save the country from imminent danger." Throughout the movie various camera angles and movements are utilized to create an action packed movie. For example, various two-three shots are used to create a sense of how under powered the protagonist is against the antagonist. As another example, many establishing shots are used to establish the setting of each of the scenes. In the beginning of the movie, a establishing shot of the compound Mike Banning is training at appears. Later on in the movie an aerial establishing shot is used to show the hospital in which the president is recovering. Another important aspect of the movie is the mis-en-scene, such as the costumes, lighting, actors, makeup, props, and settings. The costumes in the movie are mostly formal, such as suits and ties, to represent the Secret Service and the president. The lightning in the movie can be murky at times while at other times bright to signify the public spaces the protagonists are in. The makeup remains fairly neutral as the movie is trying to represent current day society. Also, the actors are meant to represent the president, the presidents staff, as well as the Secret Service. As such, the actors are in general good health and fit. Finally the props and settings are meant to resemble current day society. The setting is typically urban cities, with the occasion of wilderness and the main characters use props such as assault riffles, pistols, knifes, trucks, cars, helicopters, etc. Furthermore, another important aspect of this film and thriller genre is the sound used. This movie makes use of loud sound effects such as gun fire, explosions, or a helicopter moving. The dialogue also contributes to the plot development of the story by introducing more details regarding Mike Banning's involvement in the assassination and setup. Finally, the editing contributes to the action packed scenes throughout the movie. For instance, a shot-reverse-shot is used to create suspense as the antagonists movie towards the hospital where the president is being treated at. The camera shifts from the antagonists cars, to the hospital, and back to the cars.

In summary, the movie "Angel has Fallen," follows the conventions and codes of the thriller genre. The movie makes use of action packed scenes, multiple points of views, a large group of antagonists compared to the single protagonist, and loud sound effects (ex. gunfire). These elements all help to contribute to the movies fast pace and action packed plot. This fast pace combined with the action packed scenes keep audiences interested. Angel has Fallen makes use of many elements of thrillers that appeal to me such as the suspenseful plot structure, loud sound effects, and multiple points of view. However, there are some elements of the movie that I do not like. Some additional editing could be added to give the scenes more dramatic effect and I would have loved to see more tracking shots to build suspense. Overall, Angel has Fallen is an amazing movie and factors such as the sound effects will be useful in constructing my Final Task.

Genre Research: A Quiet Place

According to Rotten Tomatoes, "In the modern horror thriller A QUIET PLACE, a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you." Throughout the movie various camera angles and movements are utilized to create a sinister tone. For example, various low angles are used to create a sense of how intimidated and powerless the main characters are compared to the mysterious creatures. As another example, various wide shots are used to establish the setting of each of the scenes. In the beginning of movie, a wide shot of the abandoned city where they get there supplies from is utilized, as well as, a wide shot of the ranch where the main characters live later on in the movie. Another important aspect of the movie is the mis-en-scene, such as the costumes, lighting, actors, makeup, props, and settings. The costumes in the movie, such as the heavy jackets and jeans, contribute to the feeling of isolation that can be felt throughout the movie. The lightning and makeup has a dark and gloomy color, which the lightning at times having hints of red, for instance when the mother turns on the red lights to alert the rest of the family. Also, the actors are meant to resemble a family unit as they work together to try and survive this dystopian world. Finally the props and settings are meant to resemble a post apocalyptic society. The setting is overgrown wilderness with deserted houses and ranches, and the main characters use props/tools such as shotguns, radios, knives, etc. Furthermore, another important aspect of this film and thriller genre is the sound used. However, this movie is based on the fact that characters have to be quiet, so dialogue is very rare. Instead, the movie mainly makes use of sound loud effects such as the sand crunching underneath their feat and the creatures running. Finally, the editing contributes to keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. For instance, in the bathroom scene (which can be seen in the picture above) a shot-reverse-shot is used to shift focus from the mother in the bathtub, to the monster on the stairs, and then back to the mother trying to remain silent while giving birth. Jump cuts are frequently used aswell to "jump scare" the audience and shift settings.

Overall, the movie "A QUIET PLACE," follows the conventions of the thriller genre. Despite having rare dialogue, the movie makes use of action packed scenes, multiple points of views, an antagonist stronger than the protagonist, loud sound effects, and amazing editing. These elements all help to contribute to the movies dark and sinister tone. This tone then in-turn keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. A QUIET PLACE makes use of many elements that I like such as the suspenseful plot structure, loud sound effects, amazing editing, and multiple points of view. However, there are some elements of the movie that I do not like. The audience is kept in the dark a lot regarding certain aspects of the plot such as the strange creatures and the basement in the house. I would also have liked to see more dialogue between the characters. Overall, A QUIET PLACE is an amazing movie and will be useful in constructing my Final Task. Additionally, if you still have not seen the movie I heavily recommend it.

Opening Sequence Genre Selection

Over the course of this week I have conducted research on key aspects of certain film genres, such as musicals and thrillers. After serious consideration I have decided to produce my Final Task as a Thriller film. This is due to the fact I appeal, and enjoy, almost every aspect of the thriller film and my topic relates to the thriller film conventions. My final task will be based on an accident taking placing out on the ocean while a family is on vacation which matches with the idea of building suspense and it all unfolding during the climax. During the production process I also plan to follow other conventions. I will use editing techniques such as shot-reverse-shots and jump cuts, in addition to have suspenseful music and loud sound effects. However, I do not plan on following all of the conventions regarding the mis-en-scene. For instance, the final task will use bright colors as the topic is vacation, rather the standard of dark and gloomy colors.

A comedy is "a film or theatrical production typically of a sentimental or humorous nature that consists of musical numbers and dialogue based on a unifying plot," according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary. Throughout the genre there are many typical conventions and codes that are followed. To begin with, most musicals typically use eye-line matches, over the shoulder shots, medium shots, long shots, and high angles. These camera angles and movements usually express the emotion or tone to the audience. For example, if the musical is trying to express something that is untouchable or intangible, the actors will use slow and graceful actions and movements. As another example, if the musical is trying to relieve sadness or depression, they will use upbeat singing and dancing. Another important element of musicals is the Mis-En-Scene. Important parts of the Mis-En-Scene include costumes, lighting, actors, makeup, props, and settings. First of all, lighting in the musicals is solely based on the mood or emotion the scene is trying to express. Common types of lightning include accent, spotlight, low-key, and back light lightning. Actors are usually chosen to express the story line of the musical. For example, if the musical is regarding the life of a college student, the musical might choose to use a young actor. Makeup is light and not overwhelming unless the story line calls for it. Additionally, props and scenes will relate to the musical. For example, if the story line of the musical takes place at the beach, the props would be a towel, sunscreen, and other beach accessories and the setting would be the beach. Finally, editing is still an element of musicals although not as important as other aspects. An example of editing in musicals is the flashbacks. Flashbacks are a scene in a movie set in a time earlier than the main story. Another common form of editing is jump cuts. Musicals often jump around to various scenes and settings throughout a movie, similar to how a play is preformed.

Furthermore, the most important elements of a musical consist of the original soundtracks, narrative structure, genre of songs (ex. ballet), dancing, and the score. Some examples of musical films include Grease, Hamilton, Hairspray, The Phantom of the Opera, Annie, and Cats. Sounds are very important in musicals. Common sounds found in musicals include ballad (love songs or passionate and moving songs), comedy numbers (comedic sounds to make the audience laugh), charm songs (meant to entrance or attract the audience), as well as musical scenes (a mixture of dialogue and songs).

After in depth research, I have found certain elements of musicals that I both like and dislike. For example I enjoy the musical sound tracks, dance numbers, attitudes and actions of the characters, the dialogue, and the plot development throughout the musical. These factors all contribute to the enjoyment the audience has when watching a musical. However, there are some factors of musicals that do not appeal to me. For instance, some scenes have cheesy or non-comedic dialogue,  excessive set designs and costumes, and inordinate amounts of singing without dialogue. Overall, musicals are a very important genre with important elements such as the mis-en-scene and camera angles, movements, and shots of which some appeal to me, while others do not.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A thriller is "a genre of literature, film, and television whose primary feature is that it induces strong feelings of excitement, anxiety, tension, suspense, fear, and other similar emotions in its readers or viewers—in other words, media that thrills the audience," according to literaryterms.net. Thrillers have a set of conventions and codes that producers can either choose to follow or not. To begin with, thrillers that follow the conventions usually use camera angles/movements such as birds eye views, high angles, close ups, tracking shots, tilts, and low angles. For example, high angles and birds eye view shots are used in thriller films to establish the effect that whatever is being looked down on appears to be intimidated and powerless. On the contrary, low angles are often used in thrillers to emphasize the dominance and superiority an antagonist has. Another key element of thrillers is the mis-en-scene. The costumes, lighting, actors, makeup, props, and settings all contribute to establishing the plot and keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. Costumes in thrillers are often very dull in color and concealing in order to build up the suspense and the mystery. Conventionally, the use of low key lighting to produce dark shadows on screen is popular in order create an ominous tone. Actors are not as important, but the makeup used typically consists of a dark color palate and may include blood or gore. Finally, props typically consist of weapons such as guns and knifes and settings are usually isolated, for example out in the wilderness or a haunted house. Furthermore, another key element of the thriller genre is the editing techniques. Common techniques used include flashbacks, shot-reverse-shots, jump cuts, parallel editing, and action matches. These techniques all help to create a sinister tone in the film.

Over and above that, the most important features of a thriller are well written plot structures and developments, point of views with the most to lose, multiple points of views, opening action scenes, main character's goals and fears, and fast pacing. Some examples of thriller movies include A Quiet Place, Ma, Birdbox, Get Out, Jaws, 47 Meters Down, Split and Joker. Common sounds found in thriller movies include dark/eerie sounds. These sounds tend to start off in a slow manor whilst gradually speeding up. These suspense building then leads to the climax where an action will take place.

After extensive research into Thriller movies, there are both elements that do and do not appeal to me. For instance, I thoroughly enjoy the suspenseful plot structures, loud and frightening sound effects, well thought out mis-en-scene and set design, and the camera angles and movements. However, there are some factors of thrillers that do not appeal to me. For example, there are many editing skills and techniques that need to be used, and the lack of necessary equipment that I have in order to create a suspenseful action scene. All in all, I have found thrillers to be a very interesting genre of film. The mis-en-scene, camera angles and movements, suspense, and sounds all contribute to my enjoyment of thriller. The thriller genre seems like a great selections for my Final Task.

Comedy Genre Project

This Powerpoint Presentation was a group research project that we conducted in our AICE Media Studies class. The purpose of this project was to develop an understanding for our certain genre. Additionally, we were also supposed to become familiar with our genres conventions and codes. Genres were selected at random by pulling a topic out of a cup. Throughout the Powerpoint we had to answer 8 separate questions such as elements of the genre that either did or did not appeal to us. The Powerpoint also had to be colorful, creative, and have music that related. This project related to our Final Task as we developed an understanding of the conventions and codes, which we could either choose to follow or not in our Final Task.

Choosing the Right Pitch

In this blog I am going to begin narrowing down my pitch choices for my Final Task. From the previous blog, I had developed 3 different pitch ideas for my Final Task. However, reflecting on my ideas some would be easier to film than others. Specifically pitch #2, would prove to be extremely hard to produce. For reference, the pitch was about how in a dangerous, full of crime city, one man becomes a witness to a horrific crime that puts him serious danger if he decides to testify. Acting out a gruesome crime and selecting locations, I believed would be the hardest part about the pitch which is why I discarded the idea. Also, I do not have many of the props that I would need to act out each of the scenes. Now that I am down to two pitches, I will discuss both of them in some more depth. Ultimately, I will decide on my final pitch after reviewing some key aspects about them both.

My first pitch, goes as follows, Its the year 2020 and there is a kidnapper on the loose in Florida. Every night, he stalks for his victims, until, one day he an extraordinarily vulnerable victims. In order to escape the clutches of the kidnapper, the victims must search for a way to escape. That is untill things turn for the worse. This pitch is a good pitch for the assignment in some aspects. First of all, location selection would not be difficult as my local areas that the film could take place at. For example, at the local park or at a recreational facilities place. Another reason this pitch may be a good option is the genre successfully completes the objective of the 2 minute opening section. A kidnapping scene or modern mystery is full of plot twists and unexpected events that surprise audiences. This in turn keeps audiences on the edge of their seats and encourages them to continue watching the film. However, the lighting and visibility may be poor due to the film taking place at night.

The other pitch depicted a family having the time of their life on vacation on a boat until something catastrophic happens. One of the family members is involved in a serious accident (or attack) and this will change the families life forever. This pitch is a good idea for multiple reasons. For once, scene location would be easy because the most of this film would take place out on the open ocean. Florida is known for its beautiful beaches and vast coastlines making it a perfect location to film. Another reason this pitch is a good idea is because I have access to all of the props and filming equipment necessary. Regarding props, my family owns a small boat that can travel in the ocean and we have several things we can do such as fishing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, or tubing. The equipment on other hand is mostly waterproof, such as my GoPro that records 4K footage, except for my drone which will also be used.

All in all, on the basis that there is little downside on filming this pitch, I have decided to select the accident on the ocean. I have access to stunning locations, props, actors, and equipment that I will need to complete my Final Task. With little downside to the pitch, it seems to be the right decision and I believe it will be a blast to produce it!

Start of Final Task

It is officially the year 2020 and our second semester of AICE Media Studies has commenced. This semester well be even more challenging than the previous as we are beginning our final task. However, I first want to begin with by re-introducing myself. My name is Blake and I live in the United States, specifically the state of Florida. Additionally, I am still attending Fort Lauderdale High School as a sophomore. I was born on June 27th, 2003 making me 16 years old. I had previously lived in Parker, Colorado where I took interest in activities such as baseball, traveling, snowboarding, and so much more. Due to the cold whether however, my family decided to move back to Fort Lauderdale and we haven’t moved anywhere since. Looking forward, I am very excited to continue learning about the distribution and production of media, specifically film. Also, I am enthusiastic to see how the skills Ive learned on the previous two projects will impact the production quality of my Final Task.

As previously stated, I am enthusiastic about seeing how my production skills have developed throughout the year. This is especially so in areas such as the research, storyboarding, filming, and editing stages. To begin with I believe my research skills have greatly developed over the first semester of the year. This is because I have learned to identify the conventions of a certain genre and determine if it would be beneficial or harmful to follow these conventions when developing my product. For example, when producing the Nike commercial we decided to follow the typical conventions of an athletic commercial in order to create brand recognition with our audience. My storyboarding skills have also developed throughout the year. Ive learned to design a creative storyline and illustrate my thoughts and ideas on paper. Additionally, my filming has improved greatly. The previous projects have made more comfortable with incorporating different shots and angles into my product. For example, when filming my music video, one of my favorite shots was the  pan of the coastline at the beach. Finally, I have found that my editing skills have greatly improved. Prior to this class I had never used Final Cut Pro, let alone a professional editing software. This was a learning curve, but eventually I became more and more familiar with the software.

Now that I have re-introduced myself and I have discussed the skills I have learned, I want to begin discussing the pitches I have created for my final task. A pitch is a Hollywood term used to describe an idea where a film is encapsulated in 25 words or less. For my Final Task, I was assigned to create 3 different pitches, and they go as follows.

Pitch #1: It’s the year 2020 and there is a kidnapper on the lose. Every night, he stalks for a victim, until, one day he finds an extraordinarily vulnerable victim. However, what happened was not what met the eye.

Pitch #2: In a dangerous, full of crime city, once man becomes a witness to a horrific crime that puts him in serious danger if he decides to testify.

Pitch #3: One family is having the time of their life on a boat, until a serious accident/attack takes place that will change their life forever.
